Academic Guidance and Counseling

The students’ Academic Guidance and Counseling Service is an integral part of the academic program at the University. International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) values this service because it helps students obtain the best results, adapt to the university environment, make use of available opportunities, and resolve personal or academic problems through counseling.

A Student Academic Adviser is assigned in each department and for each semester section to provide academic, career and welfare counseling. Advisers specify at least two periods a week in their timetables so students can meet them during office hours.

Role of the Academic Adviser

Academic advising is an interactive partnership where the adviser assists students in planning their academic careers. Advisers help with registration, resolving academic problems, academic/educational advice, planning for projects/theses/internships, and pointing students to employment opportunities. They also listen to personal problems and make referrals when necessary.

Advising Activities

The Student Academic Adviser shall carry out the following activities:

i. Before registration

  • Review the student’s previous semester performance and verify grades obtained.
  • Check academic status: semester GPA, outstanding or failed courses, and courses that need retaking.
  • Discuss previous results and current status, then make a work plan for the next semester ensuring failed or incomplete courses are registered if needed.
  • Provide comprehensive guidelines in advance (for example via the Admission Handbook or departmental brochure).

ii. During the semester

  • Collect the list of advisee students from the departmental office and hold at least two meetings during the semester (at least one must be individual).
  • Select one class representative (CR) among advisees to support class discipline and performance; CR may be changed next semester based on results.
  • Familiarize students with study systems, academic life, registration & examination rules (GPA vs credit hour policy, retake/improvement, add/drop, non-collegiate/dis-collegiate, re-admission, etc.).
  • Enquire about difficulties in any course and discuss economic, health or social issues affecting performance.
  • Communicate rights, obligations, and codes of conduct (refer to the Students Guide).
  • Maintain an advising data sheet with academic information and progress; open an "Advising File" to store records for each advisee.

iii. After the semester

  • Classify advisee students by CGPA: <2.00, 2.00-2.99, 3.00-3.49, and 3.50 & above to monitor improvement.
  • Inform guardians for students with GPA less than 2.50 to identify causes of poor results and seek support.

Advising aims to provide guidance, support and encouragement and depends on a close, trusting relationship between student and adviser.
